Transportation Management

Betagro strengthens farm-to-fork transportation with Blue Yonder

The company

Headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand, Betagro is the country’s leading integrated food company. The business spans across animal feed, pharmaceuticals, livestock, poultry, eggs. It also distributes processed foods pet food. Betagro’s production and distribution network reaches every region of Thailand and extends into international markets across Asia. The company operates 64 production plants across Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Singapore, with an export network serving more than 30 countries worldwide.

The business challenge

Betagro operates in a difficult cost environment shaped by a variety of factors such as illegal meat smuggling, shifting meat demand, rising global logistical expenses, and uneven post-pandemic volatility, among others.
Additionally, the company’s transportation planning processes were strained by network complexity.  The company has inbound movements from farms and suppliers to plants, outbound distribution from plants and branches to customers, and regional branch operations across Thailand.

The solution

Betagro selected Blue Yonder Transportation Management (TMS) to reduce logistics and transportation costs across its food and protein business unit in Thailand. The Blue Yonder Transportation Manager solution manages end-to-end domestic transportation for inbound farm and supplier movements involving poultry, swine, and eggs, as well as outbound finished goods distribution to branches, shops, and other customer locations.
Blue Yonder Professional Services led the implementation from blueprinting through rollout support. The team facilitated business and IT workshops, documented requirements, configured Betagro’s TMS environment, designed SAP integration with Blue Yonder Platform Data Cloud, and supported key user training and go-live activities.

"Embracing Blue Yonder TMS is our foundational step toward optimizing logistics expenditure and transforming how we manage distribution. As the key driver of our network operations, TMS empowers our teams with accurate data, streamlined workflows, and enhanced connectivity, ensuring we deliver excellence at every step of our logistics network."

Building control across a complex transportation network

Betagro faced cost pressure from several areas at once. Pork and chicken prices were affected by illegal meat smuggling and shifts in market demand. Feed material prices increased, while global logistics costs added pressure to production and distribution expenses. Slower post-pandemic recovery in domestic and international markets, combined with foreign currency volatility, made cost discipline even more important.

Transportation planning across its fleet of 1800 vehicles added another operational pressure point, as manual processes could not keep pace with the company’s network complexity. Delivery plans were built manually from delivery-order reports. Driver and truck assignments relied heavily on planner experience, while carrier availability was confirmed through phone calls and email. Tariff and rating work required spreadsheets, manual updates, and local knowledge of region-specific rate cards. When fuel prices changed, rate adjustments created rework and increased the risk of inconsistent freight cost application.

Blue Yonder Transportation Manager brings Betagro’s transportation flows together into a common planning and execution solution. Master data for plants, ship-to locations, farms, branches, carriers, and customers is synchronized from SAP into Blue Yonder TMS. Purchase orders, sales orders, and stock transfer orders and Excel-based inbound egg orders are all brought into the system for planning and execution.

The data foundation has helped Betagro reduce dependence on disconnected reports and planner emails. Automated planner assignment routes orders to the right team based on sales office, branch, and plant-cluster rules. Blue Yonder TMS evaluates load opportunities across multiple locations instead of requiring planners to build transportation plans, one shipment at a time.

Turning tariff complexity into governed cost management

Betagro worked with Blue Yonder Professional Services to replace Betagro’s previous spreadsheet-driven freight settlement system with a more modern solution.

“The Blue Yonder Professional Services team led the end-to-end implementation of our TMS solution, covering aspects with us like business blueprinting, solution design, technical architecture and integration, configuration, data governance, key user training, and phased rollout support,” said Worapodmongkol.

Minimum freight charges, weight and quantity markups, equipment-specific rates, and special categories are handled through configured logic. Blue Yonder TMS can also apply different rate rules when freight costs depend on more than the route alone. Structured processes for tariff extensions, renewals, and fuel-price updates help Betagro maintain current rate cards without rebuilding calculations manually every time costs change.

The company has seen more consistent freight cost application across lanes, regions, and movement types. Betagro can see transportation costs by lane, region, equipment type, inbound direction, and outbound direction with greater confidence.

Optimizing loads around real-world constraints

Blue Yonder TMS gives Betagro planning and optimization capabilities that reflect how the business actually operates. Instead of planning each delivery separately, the solution consolidates orders across locations to improve truckload utilization while respecting pickup and drop restrictions. Commodity rules, business hours, equipment restrictions at individual locations, truck bans, and dock-to-commodity mappings influence the plan.

Vehicle and driver constraints also matter. Blue Yonder TMS can consider carrier vehicle availability, schedule more than one trip per day when time allows and prevent long-haul vehicles from being assigned to next-day work before returning to base. Driver assignment can account for route and ship-to experience that planners previously managed through individual knowledge.

By converting rules into system logic, Betagro reduces reliance on manual judgment and in-person coordination. Planning becomes repeatable, and the system can produce transportation plans that account for cost, capacity, service windows, dock limits, vehicle constraints, and food-handling requirements at the same time.

“We now have a modern TMS in place which helps manage our logistics operation, providing real time data for the appropriate cost, quality, efficiency and competitiveness of each of our 1800 trucks every day,” said Worapodmongkol.

Digitizing execution from tender to delivery visibility

Execution has also moved from phone and email coordination into one connected workflow. Carriers and drivers use the Blue Yonder mobile app or web interface for tender acceptance or rejection, check-in and check-out, and dock activity updates. Driver location is captured at periodic intervals and sent to Blue Yonder TMS as current-location events, giving Betagro’s planners real-time track-and-trace visibility.

Using the cloud to support scale, security, and integration

By deploying Blue Yonder TMS and Blue Yonder Platform Data Cloud on Microsoft Azure, Betagro gains a scalable, secure, and resilient cloud foundation for its transportation operations. Microsoft Azure gives Betagro the flexibility to handle transaction volume across a multi-region logistics network without requiring the company’s IT team to size, provision, patch, or maintain on-premises servers, since Blue Yonder manages the environment as a cloud service. The cloud platform helps keep the transportation system available for daily operations and supports secure user access and SAP integration.

Working towards sustainability goals

Sustainability is another important direction for Betagro. The company has committed to net zero by 2040, including transportation-related carbon reduction. Better load consolidation, route optimization, vehicle utilization, and visibility can support that goal by helping Betagro reduce avoidable miles and improve planning discipline.
