The Opportunity, and Challenge, of E-Commerce

According to media and research organization Digital Commerce 360, U.S. e-commerce grew by 44% in 2020, to $861 billion. While the growth is obviously substantial, the company notes that digital sales were previously projected to hit that number in 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic pushed that timeline forward, serving as an accelerant for an already existing trend and leaving more businesses to adjust to the challenge of serving customers digitally. And that rapid growth, while a benefit to consumers, created challenges for the businesses behind the “buy” button.
